The History of Dublin's Tivoli Theatre

Staycity Aparthotels Dublin Tivoli is named after the historic Tivoli Theatre and is located on the same site as this eclectic culture hub. Originally operating as a cinema in the 1930s, it had a stint as a nightclub and a shop until opening as the famous theatre and event space in 1987.

Over the next 30 years, this cult venue saw a line-up of world-famous international and local performers across the arts including comedians, drag queens and even wrestlers. However it’s most fondly remembered for its impressive music legacy with the likes of Jeff Buckley, Blur, Rage Against the Machine and Oasis performing at this very site. Most recently it became a nightclub known as ‘District 8’ where world-renowned DJs such as Deadmau5, and indie bands like The XX ruled the weekends until its closure in 2019. Check out Fontaines DC giving it socks below. They've skyrocketed in recent years but this band started out in this very neighbourhood.

Even the carpark was a destination in its own right as street artists created murals across the walls. You can still see some of the original artwork at the back of Tivoli Square.
