Last updated Jan 23, 2025

Valentine’s Day often gets a reputation as a cliché, but at its heart (no pun intended) it’s much more; a celebration of love in all its beautiful and diverse forms. Whether you’re planning on spending time with family, a fun-filled Galentine’s getaway, a solo trip, or a romantic escape with a partner, this day is all about cherishing what and who we hold dear.

Travel is the perfect way to make memories with those you love, so what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a little adventure? We’ve taken a closer look at perhaps the lesser-known romantic side of some of our favourite cities, and have pulled together some recommendations for beautiful ways to spend time with those you love in these wonderful destinations. All filled with their own unique charm, each are perfect in their own way for a memorable getaway.

Dublin

Dublin offers a charming mix of romance, culture, and fun—perfect for a Valentine’s, Galentine’s or Palentine’s trip!

Cruise Along the River Liffey

Dublin is set on the River Liffey, meaning you can add a romantic touch to your time there with a wonderful River Cruise. Take in the city’s iconic views, architecture both old and new, and watch the world go by from the water. Some cruises offer dinner and drinks too. You can take your pick of them here.

Wine and Dine

A romantic weekend away isn’t complete without a meal at a fantastic restaurant, and in Dublin you’re completely spoiled for choice. The food scene in Dublin is exceptional, with all cuisines and price ranges catered to. A few of our favourites for a cosy, ambiance-filled evening with food to die for are Sophie’s for rooftop elegance, Kicky’s for hand rolled pasta and signature cocktails, or Uno Mas for an intimate Spanish-inspired experience.

Catch a Theatre Show

Dublin is renowned for its rich literary heritage, celebrated playwrights, and deep-rooted connection to the world of literature. So while you’re visiting for Valentine’s Day, a theatre date is a must! Catch a world-famous musical at the Bord Gais theatre, see emerging talent perform at Smock Alley (which just so happens to be Ireland’s oldest theatre), enjoy Irish drama on stage at the Abbey, or snap up tickets to a comedy show at the beautiful Olympia theatre.

Heidelberg

This picturesque German city is just an hour from Frankfurt. A dream destination for romantics, Heidelberg looks like it’s been taken straight from the pages of a fairytale.

Explore The Philospher's Walk

Once you arrive, perhaps the best thing to do is get your bearings with a stroll around the city. The famous Philosopher’s Walk is an incredibly scenic walk along the Neckar River, where visitors can soak up panoramic views of the whole city, as well as the 18th century Old Bridge and Heidelberg Castle. The Philosopher’s Walk is named as such due to the fact that it was historically frequented by philosophers, poets and scholars who sought inspiration from its tranquillity and beautiful views. Along the way, there is also the Philosopher’s Garden, a beautiful resting place to take in the scenery and nature.
