Summer in Paris

Last updated Apr 08, 2026

Sun-soaked streets, romantic riverside strolls and city buzz… there’s never a bad time to visit Paris, but summer is when the city really lets its hair down. As the days stretch longer and the sun shines across its grand boulevards and charming side streets, Paris comes into its own.

Start your day with a slow coffee at a street-side café (the people watching here is unmatched!), before wandering along the River Seine as the city wakes up. Along the riverbanks, the famous bouquinistes (Paris’s traditional green bookstalls, recognised as a UNESCO cultural heritage treasure) begin to open, filled with vintage books, art prints and postcards.

Paris in July

Paris Plages: July - August

One of the season’s biggest highlights in Paris is Paris Plages, when the banks of the Seine transform into a pop-up beach, complete with sand, deckchairs and palm trees. Yes, really. There are also pop-up bars, street food stalls, free activities like yoga and dance classes, and even places to cool off with misting stations or temporary swimming spots. It’s a uniquely Parisian take on summer holidays, and a perfect place to pause between sightseeing. Paris Plages takes place from early July right through until the end of August.

Bastille Day: July 14th

Then there’s Bastille Day on July 14th, France’s biggest national celebration. The day usually begins with a grand military parade along the Champs-Élysées, with marching bands and planes flying overhead in formation. Across the city, locals spill out onto the streets for picnics, parties and open-air concerts.

As evening falls, the crowds gather along the Seine and around the Champ de Mars for the main event: a live classical concert followed by a spectacular fireworks display launched from the Eiffel Tower. It’s one of the most memorable nights you can have in Paris.

Music and Festivals

Music lovers are in for a treat. Paris’s summer calendar is packed with standout festivals, from the eco-conscious Solidays (June 26–28th) at Hippodrome de Paris Longchamp - with big names like Zara Larsson and Major Lazer - to the free, open-air energy of Fnac Live (July 2–4th) in the heart of the city at Place de l’Hôtel de Ville.

Solidays is an easy journey, taking around 30 minutes from our La Défense aparthotel or closer to an hour from Gare de l’Est by metro. Fnac Live, meanwhile, is right in the centre; just 20 minutes from Gare de l’Est, or around 35–40 minutes from La Défense.

Later in the summer, Rock en Seine (August 20–24th) takes over the beautiful Domaine National de Saint-Cloud, drawing buzzing crowds and headline acts like Lorde, Tyler, The Creator and The Cure. From La Défense, you’re looking at a quick 20–25 metro trip, while Gare de l’Est is closer to an hour away.

Prefer something a little more low-key? Grab a blanket and head to Parc de la Villette from late July to mid-August, where open-air cinema screenings light up warm summer evenings. Watching a film under the stars, surrounded by locals, is about as laid-back (and magical) as it gets. It’s close to Gare de l’Est (just 15–20 minutes on the metro), or around 45–50 minutes from La Défense.

Sporting Events in Paris

If sport is more your thing, Paris brings the energy all summer long. Roland-Garros (late May–early June) serves up world-class tennis in an iconic setting at Porte d’Auteuil and is only around 20 minutes from Staycity La Défense by metro or taxi, or 45–50 minutes from Staycity Gare de l’Est by metro.

Cycling culture is everywhere, from catching the final sprint of the Tour de France along the Champs-Élysées to simply joining locals on two wheels and exploring the city at your own pace.

When temperatures rise, cool off like a local at Bassin de la Villette, home to open-air swimming spots each summer. For big-match atmosphere, head to the Stade de France (around 30–40 minutes from Gare de l’Est on the metro, or closer to an hour from La Défense).

Beyond the big events, it’s the everyday moments that make a summer trip to Paris so special. Long lunches that turn into evening drinks. Aimless strolls that lead to hidden courtyards or riverside picnics. That feeling of not needing a plan, just a good pair of comfortable shoes and a sense of curiosity for this incredible city that never gets old, no matter how many times you’ve been.
