Where to Find the Best Coffee in Leipzig: 4 Must-Visit Stops

Last updated Oct 28, 2026

Leipzig has taken coffee seriously for more than 300 years. The first coffee beans reached the city in the 1690s, and locals have been nicknamed Kaffeesachsen (“coffee Saxons”) ever since. Today that heritage sits alongside a young speciality scene of filter bars and sourdough bakeries.

We've picked four stops that show both sides: two modern speciality cafés, an organic sourdough bakery and one of Europe's oldest coffee houses. All four are within roughly a 5–15 minute walk of Staycity Aparthotels Leipzig City Centre on Augustusplatz, so you can fit them around a city break without planning a route.

Every address, opening time and detail below was checked against the venues' own channels or official Leipzig sources in October 2026. Hours change, so give each a quick check before you head out.

Leipzig Coffee Culture in a Nutshell

Leipzig's coffee habit goes back to the late 17th century, when it was a trade-fair city and coffee houses became places to meet and do business. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote his Coffee Cantata here in the 1730s, a comic piece about a daughter who refuses to give up coffee. Saxons were also known for Bliemchengaffee, coffee so weak you could see the flower pattern at the bottom of the cup.

That history lives on at Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum, while a newer wave of speciality cafés and small roasteries has grown up around the city since the 2010s. The stops below cover both.

Best Coffee in Leipzig: Quick Picks for Your Day

  • For speciality coffee: FIX Coffee. A relaxed café just outside the ring with espresso, filter and cold brew, plus space to sit with a laptop.
  • For coffee and brunch any day: Bohemian Kids Cafe. A cosy speciality café about 5 minutes from Augustusplatz, open seven days a week.
  • For bakery treats: Nourish Bakery. An organic sourdough bakery on Gottschedstraße, known for focaccia and pastries that sell out early.
  • For coffee history: Museum Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum. Coffee has been served in this house since 1711, and the free museum upstairs reopened in July 2025 after a six-year restoration.

1. FIX Coffee: Speciality Coffee Near the Ring

FIX Coffee is the pick if you care about what's in the cup. It sits on Nürnberger Straße, a short walk south of Augustusplatz past Roßplatz, and is listed in European Coffee Trip's Leipzig speciality guide.

What to order: The menu covers espresso drinks and filter coffee, with cold brew, decaf and plant-based milks also available. Filter is what regulars rate it for, so it's a good place to try a pour-over if you normally stick to a flat white.

The setting: Expect a laid-back room with free Wi-Fi and space to work, plus outdoor seating when the weather allows. It's listed as dog-friendly, which suits guests on our dog-friendly stays.

What to check before visiting FIX Coffee

Address: Nürnberger Straße 27, 04103 Leipzig
Opening hours: Tue–Sat 08:00–17:00, Sun 10:00–17:00, closed Mon
Nearest stop: Roßplatz

Staycity tip: FIX is closed on Mondays. On a Monday, head to Bohemian Kids Cafe instead, which is open seven days a week and even closer to Augustusplatz.

2. Bohemian Kids Cafe: Speciality Coffee Steps from Augustusplatz

Bohemian Kids is the closest speciality café to our aparthotel and the easiest one to fit into any day. It's on Universitätsstraße in the city centre, near Leipzig University, and is open seven days a week. The café was started by Bara and Michael, two former law students from Münster who swapped law for coffee.

What to order: Espresso drinks, filter and cold brew are on the menu, with decaf and plant-based milks too. The espresso has been made with beans from Prague roaster Candycane Coffee, and you can buy beans to take home. It also serves a vegan-friendly breakfast and lunch, with homemade cakes and banana bread among the regular picks.

The setting: A small, cosy room with a few outdoor seats. It's kids-friendly and dog-friendly, and branded cups are on sale alongside the beans.

What to check before visiting Bohemian Kids Cafe

Address: Universitätsstraße 18, 04109 Leipzig
Opening hours: Mon–Sat 09:00–18:00, Sun 10:00–17:00

3. Nourish Bakery: Sourdough and Pastries on Gottschedstraße

Nourish is where to go for something good to eat with your coffee. Founded by Matthias Brühl and Nouredin Almekdad, it bakes with organic ingredients, its own sourdough and extra-long dough fermentation.

What to order: Bread and focaccia are the core, alongside savoury snacks and sweet pastries. The range changes weekly, and Nourish posts each week's line-up on Instagram (@bakerynourish) on Mondays, so check it before you go.

The setting: The city-centre shop on Gottschedstraße is small, with a little outdoor seating area. Both branches drew queues after opening in February 2025, and popular bakes can sell out, so mornings are the safest bet. Nourish is a bakery first, so pair your pastry with a coffee here or carry it to your next stop.

What to check before visiting Nourish Bakery

City shop: Gottschedstraße 6, 04109 Leipzig
City shop hours: Tue–Sat 09:00–18:00, closed Sun–Mon

Staycity tip: Every apartment at Staycity Leipzig City Centre has a fully equipped kitchen. Pick up a sourdough loaf on the way back and you've got breakfast sorted for the next morning.

4. Coffee Museum Leipzig: Visit Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum

If you search for the “Coffee Museum Leipzig”, this is the place you'll find. Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum, a few metres from the Old Town Hall, has served coffee since 1711 and is one of the oldest coffee houses in Europe. It's two experiences under one roof: a historic café-restaurant and a free museum run by the Leipzig City History Museum (Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig).

Back after six years: The house closed for restoration at the start of 2019. The café-restaurant reopened in April 2025, and the museum followed on 1 July 2025 with a redesigned exhibition. More than 50,000 people visited in its first year.

What the coffee-history visit covers

The museum fills 16 historic rooms on the upper floors. It traces coffee from the strict coffee-house rules of the 18th century to the GDR coffee crisis, and covers the colonial history of coffee growing and today's global trade. Along the way you'll meet Augustus the Strong, Johann Sebastian Bach and the Saxons' famously weak Bliemchengaffee, plus Melitta Bentz's paper filter and the Mokka Efti.

Downstairs, the café rooms are spread over three floors, including the Lehmannsche Stube, the Schumann-Zimmer and the Kaisersaal on the ground floor, and the Wiener Café and Café Français on the second. Past guests include the writer Johann Christoph Gottsched and the composer Robert Schumann.

How to check current visitor information

Address: Kleine Fleischergasse 4, 04109 Leipzig
Museum admission: Free
Nearest stop: Leipzig Markt (S-Bahn)
From Staycity: About 10 minutes on foot through the old town
Leipzig Card: Partner venue
Hours: Check the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum website before visiting

Staycity tip: Visit the museum first, then decide between a slice of cake in the historic café or a modern flat white elsewhere. Seeing both sides of Leipzig's coffee story in one afternoon is the point.
