New Year’s Eve is fast approaching, and what better way to celebrate than a city break with loved ones? We’ve put together a list of the best attractions and activities in Frankfurt for new year’s, so you can start planning in advance. From opera shows to firework displays, here are the best tips for your Frankfurt New Year trip!
1. admire the firework displays
First things first: the new year’s fireworks in Frankfurt are a spectacle. Thanks to Frankfurt’s location right by the Main and it’s unique skyline, the city offers one of the most breathtaking backdrops in Central Europe. We’ve found some of the best spots to view this fantastic display.
The “Mainufer”
The Mainufer of Frankfurt is a well-known location for walks all year around, as it offers an ideal view of the skyline of Frankfurt. So it’s no surprise that this area, especially the “Eisernen Steg”, is among the most popular (and crowded) view points for watching the New Year’s fireworks. The impressive reflection of the colorful lights in the water will guarantee breathtaking snapshots. The first visitors will gather here hours before midnight to secure the best spots. To prevent overcrowding, the capacity is limited to around 30,000 people.
If this sounds like too much hustle and bustle for you, you can try viewing the fireworks from the other side of the Main river. For this, it is easiest to go to the “Sachsenhäusern”, as this spot is usually less crowed and offers the same fabulous view.
The “Römer” in the old town
The “Römerberg” which is located in the heart of Frankfurt’s old town, will offer you another great view of the new year’s fireworks. The square is not far from the Main banks and is a real insider tip – surrounded by traditional German houses, you’ll love the traditional, cosy atmosphere!
The cherry on top? The Opera square s only a 10 minute walk away from the “Römer” and offers with its historic buildings another breathtaking location to admire the fireworks.
The “Lohrberg”
This place is especially popular among locals. The Lohrberg is located in Senkbach, a little outside of Frankfurt city centre, which means less crowds – the perfect spot for an authentic new years’ experience in Frankfurt. You can reach the Lohrberg easily by public transport, and you’ll enjoy a spectacular view of Frankfurt, it’s skyline and the fireworks.
The ”alte Eisenbahnbrücke”
Between the “Eyssenstrasse” and the “Deutchherrnufer”, you will find the old railroad bridge (dt.: alte Eisenbahnbrücke). This square is usually not very crowded and offers a great view of the skyline and fireworks.
