May 31, 2023 9:14am
Just because the kids are going back to school does not mean your summer is over! September to November is the very best time of year for a city break.
Need some inspiration? This is our guide to the best places to extend your summer…
1. Venice
At the height of summer the city is swarmed with tourists and pretty sweltering! But by September the majority of tourists have gone home which means you’ll get a reservation in some of the city’s best restaurants, you’ll nab the best canal-facing seat for your aperitif and there’s no queuing for your gondola rides.

2. London
There’s no denying that London has lots to offer year round, but cooler temperatures make getting around the city a whole lot easier, plus the parks come to life at this time of year. Head over for a midweek shopping trip with pals or catch a show at the West End for date night brownie points. With the UK back open for indoor dining and drinking, you can plan your holiday with minimum restrictions.

3. Edinburgh
Sure things are starting to cool down in this neck of the woods but the stunning Autumnal colours more than make up for it. Hike Arthur’s Seat for jaw-dropping views of the city and take in the crispy russet and amber landscape. The famous Christmas markets have been given the provisional go ahead to take place from the 12th of November (depending on Covid cases and restrictions) so pick up Harry Potter themed decorations and knock back some mulled wine.

4. Marseille
In Marseille summer stretches well into October with highs of 21 degrees! Expect to dine comfortably outdoors and remember to pack a few t-shirts. Wander around the portside markets and explore the colourful Panier District. Of course you haven’t visited this city properly without trying a steaming bowl of bouillabaisse (fish stew). The ideal romantic getaway destination, treat that special someone and be blown away by this magical city.

5. York
This pocket-sized city is packed with tourists over the summer. Skip the queues from September to November at York’s most famous attractions such as York Minster, The York Dungeon and Jorvik Viking Centre. Autumn dresses the city in an orange glow, making it a beautiful place to take a walk. Take off on a midweek escape to shop around the cobbled streets of Shambles or head for the pubs for a cosy night out.

6. Paris
‘Paris is always a good idea’ If it’s good enough for Audrey Hepburn… From September onwards Paris gets less crowded and more local-friendly. Visit world-class museums and galleries which update their exhibitions around this time. The Nuit Blanche – or White Night is set to go ahead on October 3rd 2021. You won’t want to miss this massive culture and entertainment festival taking place across the city (Covid cases and restrictions depending).
