Manchester Victoria station is both a mainline railway station and a Metrolink tram stop. Built in 1844, it’s located slightly north of the city centre on Hunts Bank, very close to Manchester Cathedral. The station is the third busiest in Manchester, after Piccadilly and Oxford Road and mainly offers services to destinations in Northern England.
Manchester Victoria serves as a key interchange for the Metrolink light rail system, where multiple old railway lines have been converted to tram lines. The first railway line to be converted was in the 1990s and runs to Bury, followed by the line through Oldham and Rochdale in 2009 to 2014. When they leave Victoria Station, trams switch to on-street running, heading south through the city centre to Piccadilly or Deansgate Castlefield.
