STAY IN Apartment Hotels near Chinatown
There’s been a Chinatown in London since the late 1800s, starting out in Limehouse in the East End, as sailors and immigrants arrived and set up businesses around the docks. Following heavy bombing of the port in the second World War, Chinatown moved to its present location and became what it is today.
Fitting perfectly into the maze-like streets of Soho, Chinese restaurants, shops and clubs sprang up in the area around Gerrard Street, expanding in the 1960s and becoming an integral part of the cultural melting pot of Soho. In the 1980s, the now iconic Chinese gates and a pavilion were added and large parts pedestrianised to complete the feel of a world within another world.
Today, Chinatown is a must-see: a colourful riot of restaurants, street food, Chinese barbers, lantern shops and businesses of every size and style. Walk down any of the packed streets and you can pop in for a reflexology session, grab a sticky pork bun or pick up a souvenir statue to remember your visit. 玩得开心 – have a good time!
