DUBLIN, 09 MAY 2023: Tom Walsh, the CEO and co-founder of European aparthotel group Staycity, has been announced as a finalist in the prestigious 2023 EY Ireland Entrepreneur of the Year programme.

Tom is one of 24 candidates chosen from 150 nominations by an independent judging panel and now goes forward to the next stage of the competition in the International category. An overall winner will be announced in November.

Staycity Group was founded in 2004 with an apartment in Dublin’s Temple Bar, once a recording studio used by U2. When he moved out Tom saw an opportunity to offer the apartment for short-lets to visitors who wanted the comfort of a home-from-home apartment combined with the convenience of a central location. Along with his brother Ger, an IT specialist, he constructed a website and within weeks bookings were flooding in.

Inspired by this success the pair then leased 27 apartments in Dublin’s newly developed Italian Quarter on the north quays, soon adding further properties on Dublin’s St Augustine Street and Christchurch. Targeting additional cities likely to attract a balanced mix of both leisure and business guests properties in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and London Heathrow then followed.

Award-winning Staycity now has nearly 6,000 apartments operating under the Staycity Aparthotels and Wilde Aparthotels brands located in gateway cities across France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and the UK. By 2028 the privately-held company’s development pipeline will take it to over 15,000 apartments, including into Portugal for the first time. This year Staycity is on target to achieve revenues of €230m. Tom credits Staycity’s success to the talent and motivation of the team around him whose aim is to understand the needs of the customer with a strong focus on fantastic service. This philosophy, along with comfortable, well-designed apartments, has created a growing following of loyal Staycity guests, many of whom return again and again.

The EY Entrepreneur Of The Year is a global recognition programme that is run in 145 cities in more than 60 countries. Currently in its 26th year the Ireland programme recognizes entrepreneurial achievement among individuals and companies that demonstrate vision, leadership and success.
