Everything you need to know about visiting Venice during COVID-19

July 09, 2020 8:17am

Italy was one of the country’s worst affected by the pandemic, and while Venice experienced far less coronavirus cases and fatalities than cities such as Bergamo, its main industry of tourism evaporated.

Thankfully, travellers are since slowly trickling back to Venice, but naturally many are questioning how safe it is to travel there, and what’s available for them if they do. Here, we do our best to answer these questions, alleviate any concerns you may have, and hopefully encourage you to return to this beautiful city. For without tourism, Venice will struggle to survive.

OK, first things first! Italy had one of the world’s strictest lockdowns. Where are we now in terms of restrictions?

Restrictions have since loosened considerably. While large public gatherings are still banned, factories, parks, gyms, swimming pools, sports centres, theatres, cinemas, museums, galleries, bars, restaurants and shops have all reopened, albeit under strict safety rules. Furthermore, Italy is open to international tourists from the European Union since June 3rd.

That’s great, but are international visitors required to quarantine for 14 days on arrival to Italy?

No, currently this is not a requirement. But bear in mind the coronavirus has not gone away, and guidelines may change depending on how it behaves.

If I go to Venice, can I still enjoy its main attractions and everything else this beautiful city has to offer?

Yes. But remember in the new normal, physical distancing and all the other rules apply. Also, everything needs to be reserved, including the likes of museum visits.

How busy is Venice now?

Venice is slowly coming back to life, mostly with domestic travellers, but Staycity Venice Mestre is seeing a lot more bookings, both national and international, for later this year and in to 2021. This means those who visit this summer will enjoy the city at its quietist and most beautiful, when the weather is at its finest.

Can I still take a gondola trip?

Yes, the gondolas are running, but again, social distancing and all the other rules apply.

Speaking of canals, are the stories of them being cleaner and having more visible life true?

Yes, our team at Staycity Venice Mestre confirms the canals are now teeming with life and shimmering with the greens and blues of the ocean, which they’ve never seen before. They also urge tourists to visit the beautiful beach on the island of Lido, which is perfect for families.

Venice is known for its many festivals, are any of them still happening?

Obviously, many have been cancelled, but not all. The Festa del Redentore, which features spectacular fireworks over the lagoon, is still happening on July 18th, and the world-famous Venice Film Festival is also on from September 2nd-12th.

What about daytrips beyond Venice – I assume they’re possible too?

Of course! And Staycity Aparthotels Venice Mestre is the perfect base for exploring Venice as well as the rich variety of experiences in the greater Veneto region, from the vineyards of Conegliano to the Shakespearean city of Verona. The ATVO bus company also connects our aparthotel with the stunning Dolomites and some of the region’s best beaches at Jesolo and Caorle.
