Venice isn’t all gondolas, gelato and getting lost in historic winding streets (which, let’s be honest, is half the charm). It’s also one of Europe’s most inspiring art destinations - home to everything from centuries-old masterpieces to cutting-edge exhibitions and world-famous events.
Staying at Staycity Venice Mestre gives you the best of both worlds. Mestre is an area on the mainland, just across the lagoon from the historic island city of Venice. Connected by the Ponte della Libertà, a road and rail bridge, it’s a more modern, local-feeling part of the city that offers a welcome escape from the crowds, especially at peak times. And with excellent transport links, you’ll be in the heart of Venice in minutes.
Whether you're into glassmaking traditions or contemporary installations, here are some of the top spots and events to explore during your stay.
1. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Located on the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro district, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of Europe’s leading modern art museums. Housed in Peggy Guggenheim’s former home, the museum showcases works by major 20th-century artists including Jackson Pollock, Picasso, Miró, Kandinsky and Magritte. The sculpture garden is a highlight, and the location offers stunning canal views.
How to get there: From Mestre, take a 10-minute train to Venice Santa Lucia, then Vaporetto Line 1 to Accademia.

2. Murano: The Island of Glass
Just a short boat ride from central Venice, Murano has been famous for glassmaking since the 13th century. Today, visitors can explore artisan workshops, watch live glassblowing demonstrations and browse everything from delicate jewellery to bold contemporary pieces. The Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum) is a great place to start, offering insight into the craft’s fascinating history.
Tip: Visit early or late in the day to avoid the busiest times and enjoy the peaceful canalside atmosphere.

3. Biennale di Venezia
Held every two years, the Venice Biennale is one of the most important events in the international contemporary art calendar. The main exhibitions take place in the Giardini and Arsenale, but installations and national pavilions can be found throughout the city. Even outside Biennale years, many of the venues host ongoing exhibitions worth exploring.
Good to know: Tickets can be booked in advance on the official Biennale website, and maps are available to help plan your visit.
