A Walking Guide to Dublin 8: From Vikings to Guinness

February 22, 2022 2:11pm

Dublin’s hippest neighbourhood just got a little bit better… Our brand new aparthotel, Staycity Dublin Tivoli opened its doors in January, becoming our newest Dublin 8 property. So what’s all the fuss about this part of town?

Dublin 8 is the sweet spot between old and new, with an eclectic mix of antique shops, vintage boutiques, art galleries, bars and cafés. The National College of Art and Design and Vicar Street events venue have cemented the area’s reputation for creativity and innovation, but traditional charm still remains with family run businesses and rows of red-brick cottages. Plus Dublin’s most popular attractions are right on the doorstep including the Guinness Storehouse, Christchurch Cathedral and Dublin Castle.

Pick Me Up!

Two Pups coffee is right around the corner from Staycity Tivoli, and does a mean seasonal breakfast and delicious homemade cakes to go with your joe. For something slick and Skandi head to Soren & Son. This minimalist coffee house serves some of the best coffee in the city. If you’re feeling adventurous try their beetroot oat late.

Show Me A Good Time

If you appreciate a good church you’re in luck. Dublin’s two magnificent cathedrals are on your doorstep. St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a Neo-Gothic style beauty with a wild-flower filled park beside it. Just up the road you’ll find Christ Church Cathedral, a stunner inside and out complete with picture-perfect medieval bridge and museum in the crypt. Check their websites for special events and opening hours. Dublinia Viking Museum is another must-see. Step back in time and stand in the shoes of a Viking in Medieval Dublin, learning about customs, weaponry and traditional clothing.

Balance out your day with a trip to Dublin’s number one attraction, the one and only Guinness Storehouse. Learn all about the black stuff, try pulling a pint yourself and even get your face printed on the Guinness cream! The self-guided tour finishes with a free drink in the gravity bar, with a 360 view of Dublin city. For something a little stronger the Teelings’ Distillery is also in the neighbourhood. Sample Ireland’s ‘uisce beatha’ (water of life) and join a guided tour of the distillery process.

Feed Me

Dublin 8 is stuffed to the gills with local, sustainable food options. For a tasty lunch, hit up the Fumbally, a food and events community serving homemade salads, egg dishes and an array of fermented drinks. Look out for their dinner nights with off the shelf wines and multiple courses of drool-worthy small plates. Hen’s Teeth is another eclectic gem just  around the corner. This lifestyle store slash art gallery slash café is a one of a kind must-stop for those in touch with their creative side. Executive chef Killian Walsh creates inventive menus using Ireland’s best seasonal ingredients. Book a table through their website to give it a try.
