A Short Edinburgh Marathon History

The first Edinburgh Marathon took place in 2003 with 3000 participants and since then, the event grew to become the most popular marathon in Scotland. The marathon is held in association with Oxfam charity, however, other charities are also present during the event. Notably, in 2004 alone over £2m was raised towards various charities during the event.

The top record for a male participant is currently held by Kenyan Zachary Kihara who completed the course in 2:15:26. Russian Sinaida Semjonowa holds the title for women, completing the marathon in 2:33:36. Both records were set in 2005, a year that the marathon nearly didn’t happen due to some financial problems.
