Having lived in Dublin for nearly a decade I have to say that it is a unique city. There is something magical about Dublin and the people here. From my own experience I can atest that Dublin is a city that you simply don’t want to leave.
One of my new years resolutions is to spend more time writing about our cities and I want to start this off with one of my favorite places in Dublin, the famous Temple Bar.
If you haven’t been to the city before, Temple Bar is located in central Dublin, a square shaped area surrounded by the River Liffey from the North. It’s southern border is marked by Dame street, Westmoreland Street on the east and Fishamble Street, famous for the first performance of Handels Messiah there in 1742 on the west.
Temple Bar is by far and away one of the highlights of Dublin. Called the cultural quarter of the city, it’s famous for its lively nightlife, clubs, bars, galleries and concert venues.
Many Irish cultural institutions have their base of operation on the Temple Bar. Irish Photography centre, the Ark Children’s Cultural Centre, the famous Irish Film Institute with its fabulous cinema showcasing the best movies from all over the world are all there. A concert venue, Temple Bar Music Centre stands in its middle, decorated with images of big music names of the Irish music scene. Temple Bar Gallery and Studio brings together many artists offering them space to work and showcase their talent. The projects arts Centre offers much delight to a theatre fan and more.
Some financial institutions are also located in the famous Dublins district. Irish Stock Exchange and Central Bank of Ireland being the main ones.
After dark, the area becomes the centre of nightlife of the city. With the multitude of clubs, pubs and restaurants, there is something for everyone. The most notable pubs include the Porterhouse, the Turk’s Head, Czech Inn and the Foggy Dew.
The Cow’s Lane, a small street right around the corner from our offices holds the fashion and design market every Saturday, while every Sunday on the Temple Bar Square you can browse through hundreds of second hand books at the Temple Bar Book Market.
Temple Bar is without a doubt a must see if you are coming to Dublin. And, if you do, make sure that you also check our Dublin apartments, where you can stay and relax after the exhausting day discovering the city.
